Understanding the Biophysical Profile (BPP)

Carissa Tomer • February 26, 2026

The Biophysical Profile (BPP) isn’t just a checklist — it’s a snapshot of fetal health, assessing four parameters that give vital information about fetal well-being.

During the exam, four ultrasound parameters are assessed and scored.

  • Fetal Breathing Movements

At least 1 episode

≥30 seconds duration

  • Gross Body Movements

Observe a minimum of three body or limb movements

  • Fetal Tone

At least 1 episode of active extension with return to flexion

Example: opening and closing a hand

  • Amniotic Fluid Volume

Single deepest vertical pocket ≥2 cm

Why it Matters:

The information gathered during this exam guides critical clinical decisions, continues monitoring, or proceeds to delivery.

Scan confidence starts with proper education.
